If you’re someone who feels like you react to literally EVERYTHING, and you’re constantly battling exhaustion, allergies and sensitivities, sinus congestion, diarrhea (or constipation!) headaches, and other histamine symptoms, then it’s quite likely that you’re actually dealing with a fungal overgrowth.
Let’s go a little deeper here.
What most people do when facing histamine symptoms is turn to “allergy support” supplements or antihistamine medications like Zyrtec®.
And while these things can provide some relief, histamine ITSELF is not the main issue.
It all starts with your immune system and a specific type of white blood cell called mast cells.

Mast cells play a lot of different roles in your body, like defending you against infections and healing wounds.
Because they are always “on guard” to protect you, mast cells are designed to sense what’s going on IN you and AROUND you.
They can get easily triggered by things like viruses, bacteria, fungi, neurotransmitters, and hormones, and even external factors like chemicals, temperature, light, smells, and touch.
You have mast cells in nearly every part of your body.
This is why – depending on which mast cells get activated – your symptoms can seem so all-over-the-place!
Mast cells triggered in your gut can cause diarrhea or food reactions…
Mast cells triggered in your skin can cause itching, hives or even hair loss…
Mast cells triggered in your nervous system can cause headaches, anxiety or brain fog…
…and the list goes on.
When mast cells are triggered, they release chemicals called mediators.
Histamine is just ONE of these mediators, and it’s known for causing the classic symptoms of redness, swelling, and itching.
If the mast cells keep getting triggered by something, they can stay activated and release a constant surge of histamine through the body.
When the symptoms caused by ongoing histamine release become chronic and start affecting two or more systems of the body, the condition is commonly referred to as “Mast Cell Activation Syndrome” or “MCAS.”
With MCAS, you have the right amount of mast cells, but they are OVER-reactive. And many times, they don’t stop responding even when the stimulus is over.
If the histamine is released faster than your body can clear it, you can end up with histamine intolerance.
(This is when you may start reacting to even “safe” exposures like foods and supplements.)
Your ability to clear out histamine depends on several factors like genetics, nutrients, and gut health.
What Are the Top Mast Cell Triggers?
In our experience, a major cause of mast cell activation is FUNGUS.
Specifically, Candida (yeast) overgrowth and/or toxic environmental mold can make your mast cells go crazy.
Fungal antigens are particularly irritating to the immune system, and they create the perfect storm that causes your mast cells to release their inflammatory mediators.
I have found that a majority of my patients have some degree of Candida overgrowth, especially if they’ve taken multiple rounds of antibiotics.
That’s why at Attune, all of our patients who “react to everything” or have histamine symptoms of any kind get a thorough workup for fungal issues.
After reviewing your complete health history, we order specialized testing to look for yeast overgrowth, mold toxins, gut imbalances, and other possible causes of your symptoms.
We also check for nutrient deficiencies, because your body needs specific vitamins and minerals to break down histamine properly.
Once we have your lab results back, we develop a plan that is tailored to address your unique imbalances, allowing your body’s own self-healing mechanisms to work as they should.
By approaching it this way instead of just taking antihistamines forever, you’ll get relief from those annoying symptoms AND you’ll be much healthier in the long run.
If you’re feeling ready to put your histamine issues behind you, so you can stop worrying about EVERY little thing that might set off your symptoms, then we invite you to join our 1-on-1 Health Transformation Program.
In this hands-on program, you will work with us privately and receive a comprehensive workup where we leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of your symptoms.
You’ll get a tailored treatment plan that works WITH your body, the way nature intended.
Not only can we help you resolve your histamine issues, we also work on your energy, digestion, hormones, and any other areas that you want to improve.
(Because it’s all connected 🙂)
A lot of our patients tell us how relieved they feel to finally have someone sit down with them and take the time to connect all of the dots in their health story.
With the right functional medicine lab tests and good naturopathic treatment, you can overcome your histamine issues and start living the healthy life that you deserve.
